Change is on the horizon for solar energy users in Cyprus. By the end of 2025, the option to apply for net metering—the system that allows households to offset their electricity bills directly with the energy their panels produce—will no longer be available for new applicants.

More than 80,000 households already benefit from this arrangement, and those contracts remain valid for 15 years. That means if you already have net metering, your bills and energy calculations won’t change until your agreement naturally ends. For most households, that won’t happen until well into the 2030s.

The bigger impact is on those who are still considering installing photovoltaics. After December 2025, new installations will only be eligible for net billing. While the concept sounds similar, the difference is important: instead of offsetting kilowatt hours directly, the system credits households in euros based on the value of the energy fed into the grid at the time of generation. This often works out to be less cost-effective, since the price you receive for energy sold back to the grid can be lower than the price you pay to consume energy during peak times.
